Firewise
Farms
Is an initiative that allows members of local
fire brigades to work with farmers and other land managers to identify
potential hazards and what mitigation activities can be undertaken
to increase the preparedness of a property.
It is mainly based around a Pre Incident Inspection preformed by
both the land manager and a member of the local brigade. A checklist
is used to identify aspects of a property that may be at risk during
a fire. This then allows the local brigade member to discuss possible
treatment options that fit the specific requirements of the land
holder.
Firewise
Schools
A number of programmes, like Fireguard For
Kids, and resources have been developed specifically for use in
schools. Where possible these have been designed to meet current
curriculum and particularly the requirements in PDHDE, Science,
History & Geography.
Firewise Alert
During bushfire incidents, residents in the
affected area receive advice in the form of an “ALERT”.
These Alerts detail current fire activity, precautions and preparations
and what is being done to combat the fire. The Alerts may be in
the form of letter box drops, email or telephone trees, broadcast
by the media and/or available on local websites.
Firewise Groups
These are small groups of local people, or
neighbours, who work together, in conjunction with their local Fire
Service, to develop strategies to cope with the threat of fire in
their immediate area. Through a solid understanding of, and good
information on, fire safety issues a group is better able to prepare
their own properties to minimise or prevent the impact of fire.
Street Firewise
Street Firewise is, as the name suggests,
based around a meeting in local streets where the presenters attempt
to:
• Improve your understanding of Bush Fires
• Detail how a fire could affect your street
• Assist you in preparing a pre-fire action plan
• Assist you to make informed decisions based on your
options
• Identify practical solutions to reduce the risk around
your home
• Enure that your home is prepared for the threat of
fire.
Firewise Forums
At any time the FireWise partners are happy
to provide information to interested community groups on a range
of Fire Safety messages.
To arrange for a representative from your local fire service to
address your group, simply contact your local NSW
Rural Fire Service Control Centre, and speak with the Community
Safety Officer, or contact NSW
Fire Brigades.
Firewise Advertising
The Firewise partners run a range of advertising campaigns to keep
members of the public up to date with the latest information on
fire safety. Some of the recent campaigns include a joint promotion
with Crime
Stoppers to help prevent arson, installing smoke alarms in every
home, Community
Fire Units, Juvenile
Fire Setters Project, Smoke
Alarm Battery Replacement for Elderly and advice about the Bush
Fire Season and what preparations
to make.
